Neurotoxins

Botox? Jeuveau? Daxxify?

These all work by blocking signals from the nerves to the muscles, so injected muscles don’t contract. When injected into specific muscles, you can expect lighter expressions with less harsh wrinkling.

Botox

Botox, the original neuromodulator, is offered as an injection that relaxes facial muscles for about 4 months to soften the look of lines and wrinkles.

Jeuveau

Jeuveau is a competitor that works for a similar 4 month duration.

Daxxify

Daxxify is the longest lasting neuromodulator showing efficacy for more than 6 months, 9 months in some patients.

FDA-approved to treat crow’s feet, frown lines, and forehead lines, neurotoxins can also be used in other areas, including the lips, nose, lower face, neck, and even downturned smiles. They can treat wrinkles created by repeated muscle movement (11’s aka the frown lines made by furrowing your brow).

In minimal doses, neurotoxins can be used to delay the formation of new lines, which is a plus if you’re young and only make lines when you move, but concerned about wrinkles developing later.

Sometimes there is a better opportunity with one or the other (rebate or pricing) and then it might be a great time to try something new. But if it isn’t broken, there is no need to fix it!

FAQ's

How does it work?

Neurotoxins prevent your nerves from telling your facial muscles to flex. The result? 5 months of temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines.

Not exactly – Botox® & Jeuveau® are the purified toxin produced by the botulism bacteria! They work by selectively relaxing muscles that contribute to frown lines and certain other facial wrinkles. So why don’t you get botulism? The amount of Botox® or Jeuveau® I would need to inject all at once to give you botulism is over 100 times the amount given in an average session, and there is no cumulative effect from session to session.

Jeuveau® is the newest neuromodulator on the market, being offered by Evolus. It has been studied in >2100 patients in 5 studies and has shown equality with Botox® cosmetic to improve moderate to severe frown lines and has shown equal or better results.

If you are a little nervous, that’s okay! Localized pain, infection, inflammation, tenderness, swelling, erythema, and/or bleeding/bruising may be associated with the injection. We use a 32G (tiny, tiny, tiny) needle and some sticks are barely felt. For specific instructions on what to do before and after your injection, please talk to your provider.

The most commonly reported side effects in clinical trials include headache, eyelid drooping, upper respiratory tract infection and increased white blood cell count. No serious drug-related adverse events were observed in the studies with Jeuveau®.

No. Great toxin treatment means looking younger and more relaxed – not looking frozen. When properly placed, they relax the muscles that cause frown lines or other wrinkles but they do not otherwise limit your range of normal facial expressions.

No – Botox, Jeuveau, & Daxxify are best for wrinkles that form as a direct result of muscle contraction. Frown lines and crow’s feet are the best examples. With continued use, these wrinkles soften over time and may even disappear. Wrinkles in other areas of the face, such as the smile lines, cheeks, or under eyes, are often better suited for lasers, peels, products or injectable fillers.
