Less pain

Local anesthesia is used during the procedure, which means the treatment area is fully numbed. You’re awake, but you don’t feel a thing during the procedure itself — just some pressure.

Mohs removes only the cancerous tissue, layer by layer, while leaving healthy cells untouched. Less tissue removed = smaller & more controlled wound = less trauma = less post-procedure pain!

Because the tissue is examined in-office under a microscope , there’s no waiting for lab results — and often, no need for a second, more invasive procedure later. That efficiency can reduce both physical and emotional discomfort.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mohs Surgery

What is Mohs surgery?
Mohs micrographic surgery is the most effective treatment for many types of skin cancer, with cure rates up to 99%. During the procedure, your surgeon removes cancerous tissue layer by layer and examines each layer under a microscope immediately in our office. This continues until no cancer cells remain, ensuring complete removal while preserving the maximum amount of healthy skin.
Most patients spend 2-5 hours in our office from start to finish. The exact time depends on how many layers need to be removed. Each layer takes approximately 30-60 minutes to process and examine. We provide comfortable waiting areas with snacks and juice for you and your guests during the procedure.
No. We use local anesthesia to completely numb the treatment area, so you won’t feel pain during the procedure — just some pressure. Because Mohs removes only cancerous tissue in thin layers, there’s less trauma to surrounding skin, which typically results in less post-procedure discomfort compared to traditional excision surgery.
While any surgery will leave some scarring, Mohs surgery is designed to minimize scarring by removing only cancerous tissue and preserving healthy skin. Our fellowship-trained surgeons use advanced reconstruction techniques, including flaps and grafts, to achieve the best cosmetic results. We provide detailed aftercare instructions to promote optimal healing and minimize visible scarring.
Mohs surgery is most commonly used to treat basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). It’s especially recommended for cancers that have recurred after previous treatments, are located in cosmetically sensitive areas like the face or hands, or are large, aggressive, or rapidly growing.
Recovery varies depending on the size and location of your surgery. Most patients experience mild discomfort that can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication. We provide detailed written instructions for wound care specific to your procedure. You’ll typically return for a follow-up visit to monitor healing and may have sutures removed 5-14 days after surgery, depending on the location.
In most cases, yes. Since we use local anesthesia rather than general anesthesia, you remain alert throughout the procedure. However, if your surgery is near your eye or involves the face extensively, you may want to arrange for someone to drive you home as a precaution.
Most insurance plans, including Medicare, cover Mohs surgery when it’s medically necessary for treating skin cancer. Our office works with most major insurance providers. We recommend contacting your insurance company before your appointment to understand your specific coverage and any out-of-pocket costs.
Our surgeons, Dr. Mike Swann and Dr. Brett Neill, are fellowship-trained Mohs surgeons — the highest level of training available for this procedure. With over 20,000 successful surgeries performed and 18+ years of experience, we’re trusted throughout Missouri. We perform the entire procedure, including microscopic examination and reconstruction, in our office the same day for your convenience.
This depends on the location and extent of your surgery. Many patients return to desk work within a day or two. We’ll provide specific guidelines based on your procedure, but generally recommend avoiding strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and activities that could disrupt the healing wound for 1-2 weeks. Sun protection of the treated area is essential during healing.

Traditional excision removes the visible tumor plus a margin of surrounding tissue, which is then sent to an outside lab for analysis — a process that can take days. If cancer remains, you’ll need another surgery. Mohs surgery removes tissue layer by layer with immediate microscopic examination in our office, ensuring complete cancer removal in one visit while preserving the maximum amount of healthy tissue.
